Understanding the Common Symptoms of Colon Cancer

About Me
Looking After Your Health

Hello, my name is Andy and this is my health care blog. If you want to enjoy everything that life has to offer, it is important that you take good care of your health. I am not a doctor but over the years, I have learnt a thing or two about eating well, exercising and how to spot the signs that you need to visit a doctor. It wasn't always this way. I used to actively avoid visiting the doctor until I married my wife who is a nurse. She taught me how to be healthy and for that I am extremely thankful.

Understanding the Common Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Cancerous cells can develop in the colon or the large intestine, which is the final or lower section of the digestive tract. Often, this condition begins with small, benign groups of cells commonly known as polyps. Unfortunately, some of these noncancerous cells can become cancer. In general, the polyps which develop in the colon are asymptomatic. You will not notice any symptoms. However, there are some signs which might indicate the development of cancerous growths or other colon dysfunctions. Therefore, if you experience some of the below-outlined symptoms, you should consult a specialist for an endoscopy

Rectal Bleeding

The presence of blood in your stool could indicate bleeding in your rectum. Bleeding from the anal cavity should be taken seriously, regardless of the underlying causes. In some cases, the source of the bleeding could be a well-known condition like haemorrhoids. However, there is a chance that the symptom could be connected to colon cancer. If you identify dark blood or stool or bright red colour in your stool, you should consult a doctor for immediate examination. The physician will recommend a colonoscopy to check for polyps or cancerous growths.

Unusual Bowel Movement

Changes in bowel movements are not uncommon due to changes in eating habits and lifestyle. For example, one might become constipated or experience diarrhoea after consuming unusual food or when going through a bout of sickness. However, if you have developed significant changes for a prolonged period, there might be an underlying problem. For example, it is advisable to consult a doctor after experiencing diarrhoea or constipation for weeks. You should also exercise caution if the appearance of your stool changes. For instance, if it becomes narrower than usual for a prolonged period, your colon might be suffering from dysfunction.

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is a common problem for individuals of all ages. Cramping, bloating and stomach aches can be caused by a wide range of diseases, conditions and physiological changes. In most cases, the cause is not severe, and it passes away within a limited period. However, if you have been experiencing unusual or unfamiliar abdominal pain, it could indicate dangerous problems in the colon. You should be particularly vigilant if the stomach pain is accompanied by symptoms such as anal bleeding, stool discolouration and bowel dysfunction. Do not overlook the importance of examination because it could allow the early discovery of colon tumour growths.

Colon cancer can remain unidentified until it is fully developed. Therefore, you should have regular screenings if you are at risk.
